Specioza - The Little Engine That Could

It always seems impossible until it’s done — Nelson Mandela. The wise words of Nelson Mandela couldn’t be more appropriate in telling the story of a special little girl called Specioza.

It always seems impossible until it’s done — Nelson Mandela.

The wise words of Nelson Mandela couldn’t be more appropriate in telling the story of a special little girl called Specioza. Being born deaf in Southern Uganda is no easy feat, so it’s understandable that Specioza had a rocky start when it came to commencing her education.

Specioza was born in Mannya Village into a very loving and extremely supportive family. Attending school is something numerous Southern Ugandan children and adults dream of; however access to an education remains exactly that for many, a dream. The Cotton On Foundation currently provide 3,793 students access to an education. Specioza is one of those lucky enough to gain sponsorship from the Torquay Early Learning Centre in Victoria, Australia.

She was enrolled into the special needs class in Mannya Village. Specioza was finding the class difficult to concentrate in and experiencing learning difficulties that often resulted in tears. She couldn’t hear, so the walk to and from school put her at greater risk of being hit by a bike or car. Her concerned parents reached out to Betty, the Cotton On Foundation Sponsorship Coordinator in Southern Uganda for help. Betty helped place Specioza at St. Marks School for the Deaf in Bwanda, where she lives on campus. We are so happy to report that since she started in February she is flourishing, enjoying learning and making lots of new friends.

There are currently four children from Mannya Village attending St Marks and for the first time in their lives, they are being given the opportunity to learn and attend a school that caters to their needs. We couldn’t have achieved this without the help of our amazing customers and staff. Every time you purchase a Cotton On Foundation product, you are helping us empower people in need.
