Quality Education, you probably hear us use this term a lot, but why? What does it actually mean and where did it come from?
You may be surprised to learn that it’s not something that we came up with ourselves, but rather a global focus that we strongly believe in and have aligned ourselves with.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals otherwise known as Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, are a set of 17 global goals designed to tackle a broad range of sustainable development issues including (but not limited to) eradicating poverty and hunger, improving health and education, and combating climate change and other environmental concerns.
Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.
The UN believe that, “Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people’s lives and sustainable development.” (1) And we couldn’t agree more!
Our passionate and dedicated Education Team have spent the past few months really looking at quality education, what it means to us, and how we can ensure it is being delivered in the communities we partner with, not just in Uganda but right across the world. It has been a real collaboration between our Education Specialists, consultants, developers and importantly our teams on the ground where our projects are located. It has also been closely aligned to existing Government standards and indicators to ensure we are not re-inventing the wheel but incorporating existing improvement standards and measures for sustained success.
Our Education Developer Sarah said, “we’ve narrowed our focus to the key areas that contribute to a well rounded education and have established the 8. All of the focus areas link to and support one another as they’re equally important. Quality education focuses on having the right tools, resources and environments to learn and develop, and this focus directed our efforts.”
Next steps involve meeting with representatives from all of the schools that we partner with and Ministry and Curriculum Specialists to share the model that they have helped us develop and determine the best way to roll it out in schools in a sustainable manner. Posters will be displayed in all schools, it’s a continuous learning loop really, it is designed to give everybody involved the opportunity to drive their own improvements towards our goal of achieving quality education.
