An Appetite for Giving

The Cotton On Foundation, in collaboration the Nelson Mandela Foundation and South Africa's Department of Basic Education, has distributed 240 food parcels to school students attending Valley Primary, a farm school in Western Cape, South Africa.

Whilst the Department of Basic Education supports over 2 million students by providing a staple meal at least once every school day, many vulnerable children have no guarantee of accessing safe, nutritious food when they’re on holidays. The Mandela Day food parcel project helps to address the problem by delivering food parcels to ensure students remain healthy even whilst away from school.

Our partnership with the project is just one we are working towards improving the lives of children and their communities in the region. Whilst distributing our initial number of food parcels, we also handed out sanitary products to over 250 girls from the same community in support of the Caring4Girls campaign.

In just a few week time, Valley Primary school will also be the first of five schools in South Africa to receive a Mandela Day container library donated by the Cotton On Foundation. Additionally, with the support of our South African customers, second hand children’s books are being collected at our Cotton On superstores throughout the country to donate to the Mandela Day Literacy for Leadership Project 2015.

“Our partnership with the Mandela Foundation is enabling us to share a local, relevant story of change with our South African customers so that we can work towards empowering youth and creating sustainable futures for communities in the region,” said Cotton On Foundation General Manager Tim Diamond.

“We are honoured to be working with such a dynamic, unique and inspiring organisation that shares our values and beliefs,” Nelson Mandela Foundation Chief Executive, Sello Hatang said.

“Together we will have a huge impact and create positive change for the people of South Africa, every day.”
